Village Free School, Portland, Oregon
If our democracy, community, planet, and youth depend on our schools . . . what do they need to be like?
The VFS is our community's ongoing answer to that question.  We have 52 students, have been open since 2005, and have contributed to regional and national discussions about how democratic school's can be just and effective.  We consider ourselves leaders in the third wave movement towards schools that are both idealistic and pragmatic.  We've support and provided resources to at least 15 other schools (including 3 start-ups) and have been visited by hundreds of folks wanted to see our successes and mistakes first hand.  We've been raising just over $40K in donations from individuals to keep our costs low and are the most affordable private school in the state of Oregon.

Democratic School of Huamachuco, Peru
The Democratic School of Huamachuco is the first democratic school in Peru.
The project started in 2007 when by chance two teachers form the small town of Huamachuco met a teacher from a German democratic school who was visiting Peru. The enthusiasm of these two Peruvian teachers to make their own democratic school in the small township of Huamachuco high up in the Andes was so big that in a very short time a cooperation with … (read more)

Tximeleta School, Pampelona, Spain
Tximeleta is a Basque word meaning butterfly. This name was given to this educational experience which is constantly under construction, since we got it moving eight years ago. Tximeleta is not only for children, but also a non partisan, non religious network of very diverse people – children, partners and educators – who share a similar understanding of what learning and learning relationships are, in a way different from the main stream society we live in. That is precisely one of its main features: it was created, managed and funded by all mothers and fathers. The learning space itself it at the heart of this community.
Tximeleta is not only a school,  is a net, whose heart is the educational space where, more than 30 children between 3 and 11 years, spend some hours in the morning....

Windsor House School, Canada
Whenever my mother, Helen Hughes, talks about starting Windsor House, she tells the story of me “dying on the vine”; how I was losing that spark of life and withering away. I always felt that she was over-dramatizing it a bit. I wasn’t actually dying, I was just bored out of my mind. I remember starting to dread Monday morning by dinner time on Sunday when the stomach aches and persistent requests to skip school would start.... Read more

Kapriole school, Germany
The Kapriole is a democratic school that received state approval 12 years ago. At the moment 150 children between the ages of 6 and 19 come here to learn whatever, wherever, however, whenever and with whomever they want - all of the time.
This profound freedom and self-directed learning is the basis on which all other rules develop at the Kapriole. These rules are discussed and negotiated at the weekly school-meetings, in which each person has one vote - regardless of age and experience.
